Cornell Students for Hunger Relief have begun collecting donations for the sixth annual Big Red Food Drive.

Cornell Students for Hunger Relief (CHR) is sponsoring a can drive, “Lend Us a Helping Can!” through May 20.

The sixth annual Big Red Food Drive encourages students to use their leftover Big Red Bucks to buy nonperishable foods and donate them to the Friendship Donation Network, a local nonprofit working to prevent food waste.

At the end of the school year, when Big Red Bucks expire, students can donate food to families in need. Students cleaning out dorms and apartments also can donate unopened food items. Donations can be dropped off at Robert Purcell Community Center, Noyes and Collegetown Bagels.

Cornell Students for Hunger Relief is a student-run Public Service Center program that raises awareness in the Cornell community about local and global hunger issues and provide opportunities for students to give back through food drives and volunteering at local soup kitchens.

Co-chairs of CHR, Rebecca Liebenthal '15 and Matthew Cohen '16 said: “We’re hoping to increase the capacity of donations this year. Last year, we donated over 3,000 pounds of food. The drive is a great way to bring awareness to hunger issues and for students to use unspent BRBs to give back to our local community.”
