Explosive device brought to campus safely removed

Authorities say there was no immediate danger as Cornell University Police (CUPD) and the Endicott Bomb Squad safely removed a small, improvised explosive device from a campus building Tuesday, April 14.

A Cornell staff member reportedly brought the device to Bartels Hall after discovering it at a remote location off campus. The investigation into the incident is ongoing; however, at this time there is no indication there was malicious intent by the person who brought the device to campus, and no charges have been filed.

CUPD personnel with specialized training in identifying and responding to possible explosives initially responded around 1:30 p.m., exercising an abundance of caution to contain the device and secure the immediate area.

The Endicott Bomb Squad was consulted, and it was determined that there was not an immediate need to notify the greater Cornell community. At approximately 3:45 p.m. the Endicott Bomb Squad arrived on scene and safely removed the device.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing by CUPD, the Endicott Bomb Squad and the FBI. Authorities emphasize that any time a suspicious device is discovered, it should not be handled, transported or relocated in any way, and 911 should be called.
