Swati Sureka '15, a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, is one of two U.S. winners of the Keasbey Memorial Foundation Scholarship, which provides for two years of study at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh or University College of Wales at Aberystwyth.

A double major in biology and chemistry, Swati will spend her first year of the scholarship at Edinburgh earning a master’s degree in management of bioeconomy, innovation and governance. She plans to follow her study abroad with doctoral work in the U.S. in biomolecular engineering or environmental biotechnology.

A Goldwater Scholar, Swati has worked since 2012 in the lab of Dan Luo, professor of biological and environmental engineering, and is first author of an article in the December 2014 volume of the American Chemical Society’s Synthetic Biology. She co-founded Splash, a science education program for students in grades 7-12; co-founded the Chemistry Peer Advisors Program on campus; and has held various positions on the Cornell Genetically Engineered Machines project team; and is co-president of Phi Beta Kappa.

Cornell is one of a dozen American institutions invited every three years to nominate two candidates to the national competition; this year Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Harvard university students competed for the scholarship. In 2012, Arts and Sciences senior Mallory Matsumoto received the award.

Correction - April 8, 2015: This story has been corrected to reflect that two students in the nation received a Keasbey scholarship this year.
